- Comments
- Two specimens collected by Robert C. Simpson from Fauquier and Warren counties were recently annotated by Smithsonian pteridologist W. Carl Taylor as this fern, whose general range lies well north of Virginia. Previously, some populations in the zone of overlap (which barely intercepts the northern tip of the state) were known to display intermediate molecular and spore characters; see Amer. Fern J. 92(3):185-213. The two taxa are often treated as vars. or ssp. of Athyrium filix-femina (L.) Roth ex Mert., but we here follow Flora of the Southeastern U.S. and the Flora of Virginia.
- Habitat
- Mesophytic hardwood forest in the Northern Blue Ridge region of Fauquier and Warren counties. Rare.
- Native Status
- Native
