- Comments
- The map is a skeletal placeholder pending acquisition of confirmed specimen data. Ballard recently elevated this taxon, originally a form described by Fernald, to subspecies status because of its distinct leaf morphology and ecological restriction to shale barrens of the Ridge and Valley region. Ssp. cuneatiloba has a narrow range from Pennsylvania and New Jersey to Virginia and West Virginia. The map in Ballard et al. (2023, see below) reports occurrences in Augusta, Bland, Botetourt, Loudoun, Montgomery, and Shenandoah counties, but we have been unable to determine the source of these records. For more information see Ballard, H.E., J.T. Kartesz, and M. Nishino. 2023. A taxonomic treatment of the Violets (Violaceae) of the northeastern United States and adjacent Canada. Jour. Torrey Bot. Soc. 150(1): 3-266.
- Habitat
- Shale barrens; restricted to the Ridge and Valley province. Status is uncertain, but apparently not rare.
- Native Status
- Native
