- Viola pectinata has been widely considered a variety or form of V. brittoniana, but seems distinct in its elongated triangular leaves having especially deep crenations near the base (vs. deeply cut-lobed in V. brittoniana). We follow Ballard et al. (2023, Jour. Torrey Bot. Soc. 150(1): 3-266) in recognizing V. pectinata as a separate species. See also Comments under Viola brittoniana. The current map is obviously incomplete, and further field and herbarium studies will be needed to clarify the distribution and ecology of this species.
- Habitat
- Ballard et al. (2023) describe the habitat as "moist sandy or peaty soils, sphagnous ground and seeps of coastal (occasionally brackish) marshes and riverbanks, and fields, meadows, trail edges, and forest clearings in formerly natural habitats." The species ranges along the Coastal Plain from New England to se. North Carolina. However, confirmed Virginia specimens remain very limited There are specimens at NCU and WILLI from Sussex and Mathews counties that were annotated by Ballard. Ballard et al. (2023) map it only in Suffolk and Virginia Beach, but we have not been able to identify the source of those records.
