- A Southeastern Coastal Plain endemic, known from a single historical Virginia collection at the northernmost known station for the species. See Fernald (1941, Rhodora 43: 512 and 539-541) for an account of its discovery in southeastern Virginia. In this account, Fernald mentions the species' large tussocks and flexuous, capillary peduncles, a distinctive character also mentioned by Flora of the Southeastern U.S. (Weakley et al. 2023).
- Habitat
- Represented in Virginia by a single, 1940 collection by Fernald and Long, from a peaty clearing at the northern edge of Great Dismal Swamp (City of Chesapeake). Evidently rare, although the species could potentially be found anywhere in the outer Coastal Plain of southeastern Virginia. In North Carolina, it is reported to be more characteristic of maritime forests than wetlands.
