- Most contemporary sources treat this as a hybrid of A. cannabinum and A. androsaemifolium, although it has sometimes been recognized as a species. Flora of the Southeastern U.S. states that it occurs "in populations seemingly lacking one or both of the alleged parents .... and given credence here as a hybrid-derived species." We mapped this (as A. medium Greene) through three hard-copy editions of the Atlas but dropped it when the Digital Atlas was created because of its putative hybrid status. It has been well documented in 19 counties, including some Piedmont counties quite removed from the montane distribution of A. androsaemifolium. We agree that at least some of its populations are reproducing independently and are therefore once again mapping it as a provisional species.
- Habitat
- Occurs in similar habitats as Apocynum cannabinum and A. androsaemifolium, i.e., open forests, woodlands, old fields, pastures, and roadsides. It is infrequent and scattered throughout the mountains and Piedmont, with the majority of occurrences in the northwestern part of the state.
