- This is a northern hawthorn that is reportedly disjunct to southwest Virginia from New York. Phipps in FNA9 attributes this hawthorn to Virginia, presumably on the basis of a specimen at US collected by J.K. Small in 1892 and annotated by Phipps in 1996. There is a second, pencilled-in annotation of "Crataegus tenuifolia Britt.", an obscure name that is not found anywhere in FNA but which Lance (2014, A Guide to Hawthorns of the Southeastern United States) synonymizes with C. macrosperma. This suggests the possibility of an identification error, as the widespread C. macrosperma seems more likely than a long-range northern disjunct at Small’s fairly ordinary, middle-elevation collection site. For now, however, we follow Phipps in mapping this as C. scabrida var. asperifolia.
- Habitat
- Small gives no habitat information for the specimen, which was collected “about Chatham Hill Gap on Walker Mountain, Smyth County. Altitude 3000 feet.” Chatham Hill Gap is located north of the town of Marion, where Rt. 16 crosses Walker Mountain at an elevation of 3400 ft.
