Comments
Much nomenclatural confusion surrounds this plant. Allen (2005) follows FNA in calling the plant Cynodontium tenellum and listing C, torquescens as a synonym. FNA does not mention C. serrulatum at all. The Bryophyte Nomenclator, however, gives species status to serrulatum and tenellum, with torquescens as a synonym of serrulatum. In any case, whatever the name, its distribution in the US is poorly known but thought to be a northern species (Canada and northern tier of states). Its occurrence in Virginia is unlikely and the five or so Virginia specimens need critical re-examination.
