- Native only in southwestern Virginia along the New River and rivers of the Tennessee drainage; frequently planted elsewhere and occasionally established from escapes. Specimens from introduced populations have been collected in Augusta, Caroline, Dinwiddie, Fauquier, King William, Lancaster, Northampton, Page, Prince Edward, Rockbridge, Shenandoah, and Warren counties, and Suffolk City.
- Habitat
- Rich floodplain forests and limestone bluffs in sw. mountains; escaped from cultivation into disturbed, often alluvial habitats elsewhere. Infrequent to rare, scattered throughout the state; native only to sw. Virginia.
