- Originally described by G.L. Nesom in Sida 19:811-820 (2001) as Chrysogonum virginianum var. brevistolon. Subsequently, Nesom (2020, Phytoneuron 2020-94: 1–28) elevated the vars. of Chrysogonum virginianum to species rank, based on vegetative characters. Chrysogonum repens primarily differs from C. virginianum in being stoloniferous and mat-forming (vs. non-stoloniferous and occurring individually). The two taxa are also essentially allopatric, with the range of C. virginianum heavily concentrated in VA and NC, in and east of the Appalachians; and the range of C. repens generally more southern. Currently known in Virginia from just three counties, but likely to occur over most of the far southwest Ridge and Valley and Cumberland Mountain regions.
