- Three varieties have been attributed to Virginia (see Synonyms) but cannot be mapped at present because most herbarium specimens are only identified to species. The extent and relationships of morphological, ecological, and geographic differences between these segregates need critical evaluation.
- Habitat
- Dry forests, woodlands, barrens, and clearings, usually in exposed mineral soil or rocky habitats. Frequent in the mountains and northern Piedmont; infrequent to rare elsewhere.
