- Habitat
- Mesic to dry, acidic forests; usually an understory tree, but sometimes a component of the overstory. Many specimens are noticeably leaning or crooked. Common in all provinces in the southern half of Virginia, becoming less frequent from the James River north to Stafford, Orange, and Augusta, and Allegheny counties.
