- This species easily breaks into small fragments which are readily transported between bodies of water. It has become a troublesome aquatic weed in Virginia in just a few short years. The species is reported to be tolerant of polluted or eutrophied water, and has been observed to occur in impoundments fed by naturally base-rich groundwater.

- Ponds and lakes. Infrequent to locally common; scattered throughout.
