- Dry, sandy or rocky woodlands, clearings, roadsides, and dunes; also sometimes in damp, open habitats. Infrequent in the s. and c. Coastal Plain and the sw. mountains; rare in the se. Piedmont. This species has a curious disjunct distribution in Virginia.
