- This fern is remarkably disjunct to Virginia from Arkansas and westward. It was first reported from the Appalachians (Virginia and West Virginia) in Castanea 34:59-60 (1969). Recent studies have shown that Myriopteris is not closely related to Cheilanthes sensu stricto. See Grusz, A.L., and M.D. Windham. 2013. Toward a monophyletic Cheilanthes: the resurrection and recircumscription of Myriopteris (Pteridaceae). PhytoKeys 32: 49-64. The current concept of Myropteris rufa includes taxa previously treated as Cheilanthes eatonii and Cheilanthes castanea. Whether or not these taxa are distinct at some level or represent forms of one species is controversial. Most plants, including those in the se. U.S., are apomictic hybrids of unknown parentage (Weakley 2020). Further study is needed.

- Dry, exposed or thinly shaded outcrops of sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, including limestone, dolostone, siltstone, metasiltstone, and calcareous shale. Rare in the mountains and sw. Piedmont.
