- Comments
- Long known as Dennstaedtia punctilobula. However, recent phylogenetic studies show that Dennstaedtia as traditionally interpreted is polyphyletic; our temperate, eastern North American species is related to Asian, temperate species, and should be placed in the genus Sitobolium. - Habitat
- Mesic to dry forests and woodlands, rock outcrops, pastures, clearings, and road banks. Common in the mountains; frequent in the Piedmont; infrequent but widespread in the Coastal Plain; most abundant in the mountains at middle to higher elevations, particularly in northern red oak forests.
