- Dry, shaded or exposed, calcareous cliffs and outcrops; most common and characteristic on limestone, dolostone, and calcareous shales; more rarely on mafic rocks, coastal shell-marl outcrops, and masonry walls. Frequent but local in the mountains; rare in the Piedmont and Coastal Plain.
