- The southernmost native populations occur on North Fork Mountain in Pendleton County, West Virginia. The species does not occur as a native tree in Virginia but has been planted by the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, sometimes in remote areas, and has reproduced spontaneously in abundance at one site.
- Habitat
- Escaped from planted trees on Shenandoah Mountain, on the Augusta / Highland Co. line near the headwaters of the North River. Also in Page County.
