- Hybrids with P. taeda are not infrequent especially where small isolated populations occur in headwater seepage areas.
- Habitat
- Peaty swamps, wet flatwoods, pocosins, and mesic sandhills with seasonally perched water tables; usually on sites formerly influenced by frequent fires. Infrequent in the s. Coastal Plain, mostly south of the James River; still locally common at a few sites in the embayed region of se. Virginia, from the Great Dismal Swamp to the North Landing River.
