- The distinction between this and Polypodium appalachianum can be problematic, with identification confounded by frequent triploid backcrosses having intermediate morphology. The existing map is based on specimens labelled as P. virginianum or suspected of being hybrids in online southeastern herbaria (SERNEC).
- Habitat
- Moist to dry, usually shaded outcrops of various sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks. Frequent in the Piedmont and at low elevations in the mountains; rare in the Coastal Plain.
