- Dry-mesic to dry forests, woodlands, and clearings, often in sandy or rocky, acidic soils; also on thin-soiled ledges and outcrops, especially of acidic sedimentary, metasedimentary, and granitic rocks. Infrequent but widely distributed in the mountains; most frequent at higher elevations around rock outcrops.
