- Fens, seeps, wet meadows, and ditches, typically in soils weathered from limestone and other calcium-bearing substrates. Rare in the mountains (Ridge and Valley region, mostly in nw. Virginia); very rare in the Piedmont, and in the extreme inner Coastal Plain near the Potomac River.
