- A recently described, acaulescent blue violet in the Affinis group, Viola imposter has no doubt been confused with Viola affinis and V. cucullata in the past. See Burwell and Ballard in Castanea 90(2): 111–131 (2025) for the detailed taxonomic and ecological treatment. Additional field and herbarium work is needed to flesh out the full distribution of the species in Virginia.
- Habitat
- Bottomland and non-riverine hardwood forests, often in or adjacent to bald cypress swamps. With just a few herbarium specimens, its Virginia status is somewhat uncertain, although additional iNaturalist reports and a scattered distribution throughout the state's central and southern Coastal Plain suggest that it is more widespread than current documentation indicates.
