- In a wide range of mesic to dry upland forests and woodlands, in both acidic and base-rich soils; occasionally in well-drained alluvial forests; rare above 1200 m (4000 ft) elevation. Common in the mountains and Piedmont; infrequent in the Coastal Plain.
