- Rich, well-drained floodplain forests; rich cove and mesic slope forests over calcareous and mafic rocks. Locally frequent throughout the Piedmont; infrequent in the mountains (low elevations, Ridge and Valley province); rare in the inner Coastal Plain, where it is confined to calcareous ravines downcut into Tertiary shell deposits.
