- Alluvial swamps and floodplain pools, tidal swamps, tidal freshwater and oligohaline marshes, old forested millponds and impoundments, and isolated depression swamps; often growing on bald cypress knees, tree bases, or fallen logs at or near high-water levels. Rare in the Coastal Plain, with single records from Fauquier and Loudoun counties in the n. Piedmont; most documented localities for this species are in the s. Coastal Plain, south of the James River.
