- This species resembles Carex radiata but averages fewer flowers per spike and has a longer, wispy bract subtending the lowest inflorescence. Carex appalachiana often grows on rocks or in rocky soil; C. radiata does so only rarely.
- Habitat
- Mesic to dry montane forests, shaded rock outcrops, and seepage-swamp hummocks; extends across the full elevation gradient. Common in the mountains; infrequent and local in the inner Piedmont (mostly on foothills with montane affinities).
