- Comments
- The capsules of E. americanum ssp. americanum are not always "held well off the ground," as stated in many manuals; and they may also be truncate at the tip, suggesting E. umbilicatum ssp. umbilicatum. The capsules of the latter are clearly indented at the tip. The inner tepals of E. americanum are auricled at the base, whereas those of E. umbilicatum are not.
- Habitat
- Most characteristic of well-drained floodplain forests and rich mesic slope forests but ranging frequently into somewhat drier habitats; anomalous populations occasionally occur in dry, rocky woodlands and around outcrops of mafic or calcareous rocks. Frequent to locally common in the mountains and Piedmont; infrequent in the Coastal Plain.
- Native Status
