 - Dry, usually sandy, open oak/heath forests, pine-oak/heath woodlands, clearings, and wetland ecotones, on both gentle ridge crests and low-elevation flats. Rare in the nw. and wc. mountains, south to Alleghany and Rockbridge counties; most of the dozen or so known populations are in the Ridge and Valley province, with two sites on the Northern Blue Ridge.
