- This Cyperus is distinguished by its annual habit, small size, and floral scales with recurved awns (also see C. granitophilus). When dry, the plant has the odor of slippery elm.
- Habitat
- Seasonally exposed, sandy, silty, and muddy river shores and bars; impoundment and reservoir shores; thin soils and crevices on mafic and granitic outcrops; occasionally in barren, ruderal habitats (e.g., pavement cracks, sandy waste ground) that simulate the natural ones. Infrequent and local in the Piedmont and mountains.
