- A recent paper by Peterson et al. (2019) assigns the former Calamagrostis coarctata and another species to the new genus Greeneochloa based on molecular and morphological data:

- Bogs, acidic seeps, seepage swamps, mafic fens, and boggy clearings; usually in sandy or peaty soils. Frequent in the Coastal Plain; infrequent in the Piedmont and mountains.
