- Comments
- Often not distinquished from var. muricata in Virginia studies, the status of this var. is incompletely known. However, based on herbarium specimens, many of them annotated by specialists, var. microstachya appears to be far less common than var. muricata. This is not unexpected since FNA reports that var. microstachya is the characteristic var. of western North America while var. muricata has a distribution centered in the east. See also map and comments for E. muricata var. muricata.
- Habitat
- In moist to damp, low, mostly disturbed habitats, including river shores and bars, impoundment edges, alluvial fields, and beaver wetlands. Echinochloa muricata var. microstachya is probably widely scattered and infrequent over the state, but its status needs further investigation in the field and herbarium.
