- Both FNA and Flora of the Southeastern U.S. (Weakley et al. 2023) recognize two subspecies of Lolium temulentum. However, one of these (ssp. remotum (Schrank) Á. Löve & D. Löve) seems to have been selected for via agricultural practices, making the validity and utility of infraspecific taxa questionable.
- Habitat
- Fields, roadsides, pastures, clearings, and other disturbed habitats; widely planted for cover and erosion control but generally persistent only in thinly vegetated areas. Infrequent in the s. and c. Coastal Plain; rare in the Piedmont.
