- Native of e. Asia. This species is becoming aggressively weedy. Forms with leaves cross-variegated or linear-variegated with yellow are cultivated and sometimes escape or persist (in addition to the much more common green-leaved form).
- Habitat
- Roadsides, old fields, and clearings. Now frequent as a naturalized escape in many parts of the Coastal Plain and Piedmont, less so in the mountains; locally very invasive in mafic soils of the s. and c. Piedmont.
