- Var. variabilis, with short or no lemma awns and glabrous sheaths, is not formally recognized here. It occurs occasionally in Virginia, and is worthy of further study.
- Habitat
- Mesic to dry upland forests, shaded clearings and, occasionally, well-drained alluvial forests; most numerous in, but not restricted to, base-rich soils. Frequent in the mountains and inner Piedmont; infrequent in the outer Piedmont; rare in the Coastal Plain, where limited to calcareous, shell-rich slopes.
