- Discovered in Virginia in 1992 (Fleming and Rawinski); Rockingham Co. This grass forms large, cespitose clumps, with leaves evergreen and somewhat bicolored (green on the upper surface, bluish on the lower). It is a common grass in northern North America and reaches its southern limits in the East Shenandoah Mountain in Virginia and North Fork Mountain in adjacent West Virginia.

- High-elevation pine-oak/heath woodlands and sandy clearings. Rare, nw. mountains; known only from the summit of Shenandoah Mountain in Rockingham County (Ridge and Valley province).
