- According to Flora of the Southeastern U.S. (Weakley et al. 2023), var. glabrum is the only eastern representative of the species while var. pubiflorum is restricted to the lower Midwest. FNA lumps the vars., but Cronquist, Fernald, Flora of Missouri, and others recognize them.
- Habitat
- Fields, roadsides, and ditches. Infrequent but widespread in the mountains and Piedmont; rare in the Coastal Plain; where found, it may form extensive colonies from creeping rootstocks.
