- Rich cove forests, dry-mesic to dry upland forests, rocky woodlands, boulder fields, and shaded outcrops on mafic and calcareous substrates. Widely distributed but rather infrequent in the mountains; locally frequent or common in some areas of the Ridge and Valley and Northern Blue Ridge with favorable geologic substrates.
