- Maritime dunes, dune blowouts and overwash flats; rarely on inland sandhills in areas now or formerly occupied by longleaf pine (Pinus palustris); prefers open sands with little competition, sometimes occurring with the more common and very similar Euphorbia polygonifolia. Rare in the Coastal Plain.
