- Two geographically correlated varieties, in their extremes differing significantly in leaf architecture and number of leaflets, occur in Virginia. Var. latifolia Engler occurs inland over much of the e. US. The recognition of varieties is confounded by clinal and/or uncorrelated variation in leaf characters, and some specimens cannot be assigned unequivocally to a var.
- Habitat
- Dry, rocky woodlands and barrens, shale barrens, old fields, fencerows, roadsides, and early-successional forests. Common at lower elevations nearly throughout.
