The generic placement of this species may not be settled. Over the last 30 years or so, it has been transferred from Cacalia to Synosma to Hasteola to Senecio, and now back to Hasteola. Don't be surprised if future phylogenetic work in this section of Asteraceae results in it being re-assigned again.
Habitat
Floodplain forests, riverbanks, and sandy or rocky, flood-scoured bars. Rare in the mountains and n. Piedmont, along the Potomac, Shenandoah, and New rivers.
