- In Virginia this species appears to be a rather strict magnesiophile, almost exclusively associated with soils of consistently high magnesium and widely variable calcium content.
- Habitat
- Dry, open forests, woodlands, barrens, and clearings over dolostone and mafic or ultramafic rocks. Infrequent in the mountains (Ridge and Valley province) and s. Piedmont but may be numerous where found.
