- Although lumped by FNA, vars. virginica and laciniata (occurring south of our area) seem distinct, with striking differences in leaf morphology and achene vestiture. In any case, Virginia populations (except in Lee Co.) are somewhat disjunct from other populations of either var.
- Habitat
- Mesic to dry, usually calcareous forests, woodlands, and clearings; most frequent in areas of the Coastal Plain where calcareous shell marl is at or near the soil surface. Infrequent in the s. and c. Coastal Plain; rare in the sw. mountains (Lee County).
