- Higher-elevation forests, grassy balds, clearings, bogs, and seeps. Frequent on Allegheny Mountain in Highland County (Appalachian Plateaus) and the Balsam Mountains in sw. Virginia (Southern Blue Ridge); rare elsewhere in the mountains; absent from nw. Virginia.
