- Comments
- Map is incomplete at present, pending the extensive herbarium work needed to map the two recognized varieties fully. See full species map for Lobelia spicata. Var. spicata is more northern than var. scaposa and its status is not well known. In the sw. mountains, it appears to intergrade with and be very difficult to distinguish from var. leptostachys (A. DC.) Mackenzie & Bush, so the treatment here lumps the two taxa.
- Habitat
- Dry-mesic to dry forests, woodlands, and clearings; in southwest Virginia it often occurs in limestone/dolostone woodlands and barrens. More herbarium work is needed to sort out the distribution and abundance of this taxon in Virginia. Most records are from the s. Piedmont and mountains. McVaugh (1936) depicts its range as generally more northern.
- Native Status
