- Repeated, preferential browsing by White-tailed Deer has contributed to sharp declines in populations of this already naturally scarce shrub; in many areas, full-grown plants are rarely seen, and the species is reduced to small, vegetative root sprouts.

- Northern hardwood forests, Northern Red Oak forests, montane oak forests, and seepage swamps at middle to high elevations. Rare in the mountains, but formerly frequent in a few areas.
