- Flora of the Southeastern U.S. (Weakley et al. 2023) does not recognize infraspecific taxa in North American and Central American Sanicula canadensis, but suggests that some of the variants might be worthy of recognition.

- Damp to wet soil in fields, clearings, ditches, roadsides, floodplain forests, and swamps; less often in low mesic forests. Frequent to common throughout except at higher elevations in the mountains.
