- Two varieties are sometimes recognized. All Virginia material is referable to var. angustifolium if one chooses to recognize infraspecific taxa. There is no evidence that var. eamesii Wieg., with proportionally wider leaves densely pubescent below, occurs in Virginia.
- Habitat
- Mesic to dry forests, rocky woodlands, and clearings over mafic and calcareous rocks. Infrequent in the Piedmont and mountains.
