- Dry forests and woodlands over limestone in the mountains, mafic rocks in the Piedmont, and shell deposits in the Coastal Plain; also on dry sandhills and other sandy soils of the inner Coastal Plain. Rare in the sw. mountains and s. Piedmont; infrequent to rare in the c. and s. Coastal Plain.
