- North American plants are referrable to ssp. raphanistrum if infraspecific taxa are recognized. This species is a winter annual that can sometimes be abundant in fallow agricultural fields. It is therefore considered a pest but can also be an important resource for pollinators in early spring (Koelling and Karoly 2007, Am. J. Bot. 94 (5): 896–900.)

- Fields, roadsides, and other open, disturbed habitats. Frequent to locally common in the Coastal Plain; infrequent in the Piedmont; rare in the mountains.
