- Mesic to dry, usually sandy or rocky upland forests, maritime forests, and sandhill woodlands in eastern Virginia; rocky limestone woodlands in the Cumberland Mountains. Common in the Coastal Plain; rare in the Piedmont; disjunct to Lee County in the far sw. mountains.
